If you have an external Storage Drive, such as a USB flash drive or hard drive, or an SD Card that is no longer working due to data corruption or other issues. Try fixing it with DiskPart.

DiskPart is a powerful command-line utility from Windows. You can manage storage devices, partitions, if you have tried Format or Disk Management and still can't fix it.

How to Use DiskPart to Clean and Format a Drive

DiskPart will erase everything on the drive, so it is recommended that you make a copy of the system you want to format first.

1. Use the Windows key + X shortcut to open the Power User menu and select “Command Prompt (Admin)”.

2. Connect the drive you want to format to your computer.

3. Type the following command and press Enter:

diskpart

4. Type the following command to see a list of all the drives that appear and press Enter:

disk list

5. Look carefully, to identify the drive you want to clean.

For example, in the screenshot below, There are four different drives on the list, including Disk 0, which is 30GB, meaning this is the primary system drive. And look for the 8GB drive you want to clean, meaning Disk 3 is the drive that needs to be selected.

Use the following command to select the drive and press Enter:

select disk 3

Remember to change 3 in the command with the drive you want to clean. If you choose the wrong number, then this will delete all data from the drive you selected.

6. Type the following command to clean the drive and press Enter:

clean

7. Type the following command to check if the same drive is still selected and press Enter:

list disk

You will see an asterisk (*) next to the drive you selected earlier.

8. Type the following command to create a partition and press Enter:

create partition primary

9. Type the following command to select the partition you just created and press Enter:

select partition 1

10. Type the following command to set the active partition and press Enter:

active

11. Type the following commands to format the partition using NTFS and to set the label, and press Enter:

format FS=NTFS label=WC-Drive quick

Remember to change WC-Drive in the command to the name of the drive you want to use.

12. Type the following command to assign a drive letter and press Enter:

assign letter=W

Remember to change the W in the command to the letter you want, which is not used by other drives on this PC.

13. Use the exit command to close DiskPart.
