Here we will show you all the different ways to open the command prompt. Surely some of you do not know the methods below. This article is based on Windows 10 but some of these methods also work in earlier versions.


Open Command Prompt from Windows + X

Press “Windows + X”, and click Command Prompt, or Command Prompt (Admin) to open it in Administrator mode.



Open Command Prompt from Task Manager

Open Task Manager and select “More details”. Select “File” and then “Run New Task”. Type “cmd” or “cmd.exe”, and press OK to open the command prompt. You can also check the box to open as administrator.






Open Command Prompt in Admin Mode from Task Manager ( Easy secret way)

To open a command prompt in Administrator mode from the Task Manager, simply hold down the CTRL key while clicking File -> Run New Task, and an administrator mode command prompt will open.

You can easily open a command prompt by typing “cmd” into the search box (Windows + S). Alternatively, click on the Cortana search field and type “Command Prompt”.

To open as Administrator, type cmd into the search box, and both right-click and select Run as Administrator.


Open Command Prompt from All Apps in Start Menu

Open the Start menu, and click All apps at the bottom. Then, scroll down and select the “Windows System” folder, then click “Command Prompt”.


Open Command Prompt from File Explorer

Open File Explorer, and navigate to the C:\Windows\System32 folder, and then click “cmd.exe”.


Open Command Prompt from “Windows + R”

Press “Windows + R” to open the RUN dialog box. Type “cmd”, and click OK.

Open File Explorer, and click on its address bar (or press “Alt+D” on the keyboard). Then, type “cmd” in the address bar and a command prompt window will open.

Open command prompt – Opens Command Prompt in the currently selected folder with standard permissions.

Open command prompt as administrator – Opens Command Prompt in the currently selected folder with administrator permissions.


Open a Command Prompt window in File Explorer

To open a Command Prompt window in any folder or drive, hold down the shift key and right-click on the folder or drive. Right-click on a folder or empty space while holding down the SHIFT key, and from the menu, select “Open command window here”. The prompt takes the path of the folder in which it is opened.


Create Shortcut for Command Prompt on Desktop

Right-click on an empty space on the Desktop. From the menu, select “New > Shortcut”.

In the box labeled “Type the location of the item”, enter “cmd.exe”.

Press “Next”, give the shortcut a name and click “Finish”.
