Make Windows 10 Wallpaper High Quality Again

By default, Windows 10 will compress the JPEG image you use as the background, which reduces it to around 85% of its original quality. If you are not satisfied with the image results from this compression process, here's how to use high quality images.

Here's how to replace a compressed Windows wallpaper image with a high quality image in File Explorer, and how to turn off automatic compression in the Windows Registry.

Replace the Compressed Image With Full Quality Image

Windows saves the compressed background image to the following directory:

There, you will see a file named simply “TranscodedWallpaper” which has no file extension.

If you don't change your wallpaper often and don't like going into the Registry to turn it off, you can easily replace the compressed image with a high quality version using the following method:

1. Rename the file “TranscodedWallpaper” to “TranscodedWallpaper_old”. Do this step and don't delete the file just in case you want to recover from the file.

2. Find the original image and copy the image.

3. Rename the original copy image to “TranscodedWallpaper”.

4. Drag the new “TranscodedWallpaper” file to the Themes folder.

Just do this if you want to make a Windows 10 wallpaper into an original image with full quality. If you want to disable the compressed image, then follow the steps below.

Disabling Compression in Windows Registry

To disable compress wallpaper in Windows 10, you will have to make a small change to the Windows Registry.

1. Open the Registry Editor by hitting Search and typing “regedit.” Press Enter to open the Registry Editor and give it permission to make changes to your PC.

2. In the Registry Editor, use the left sidebar to navigate to the following path:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop

3. Then, you have to create a new key in the “Desktop”. Right-click the Desktop and select New > DWORD (32-bit). Name the new key “JPEGimportQuality”.

4. Double-click the new key “JPEGimportQuality” to open the Properties dialog. Change the “Base” setting to “Decimal” and then enter a value between 60 and 100 in the “Value data” box. The value you enter indicates the quality of the image, so if you want to use a full quality image without compression, enter a value of 100. Click "OK" when finished

You can now close the Registry Editor. And you have to restart your computer then setting a new image for the background for the new changes to take effect. From now on, any image that you set as a background will not be compressed at all.
