Customize Folder Backgrounds and Folder Icons in Windows Explorer | The method is quite easy.

How to Customize Folder Backgrounds and Folder Icons in Windows Explorer

Selecting a Picture to Display as the Background for the Folder Icon

Did you know that the default folder icon in Windows Explorer can be customized to have a background image? Just like your Desktop!

The default Background for a folder icon is a thumbnail preview of its contents: between images from within the folder, application icons or the types of files found in the folder. This can be customized and you can replace it with the image you want.

Here's how:

1. Right-click on the folder you want to customize and select “Properties”. Or you can also click on the folder and press Alt + Enter on the keyboard. This will open the Properties window.

2. Select the “Customize” tab, then click “Choose file” in the Folder pictures section. Browse and select the image you want to use as the background. Then, press “Apply”.

3. After you select the image, click OK again, and you're done.

Now the background image is already in the folder icon.

Changing Folder Icon

Another thing you can do is change the folder icon. If you have customized your folder as shown in the previous section, the background image of the folder icon will be replaced with the new icon. To change back to the background image display, you must return to the default folder icon.

This section shows you how to customize a folder assuming that you are not interested in changing the background image of the folder icon but you only want to change the icon. Here's how:

1. Right-click on the folder you want to customize and select “Properties”.

2. Select the “Customize” tab, click “Change Icon” in the Folder icons section.

One thing you need to remember: icon files are saved as standalone .ico files, but can also be found in .exe, .icl or others.

Once you have selected the new icon, click OK again and you are done. The new icon has been mounted to the selected folder.
